Equine Fetlock Swelling

If a Fetlock is already swollen, it can mean that there has been something wrong for longer time. It depends...

Let´s talk about the world of Horse Leg Problems!

Dear Fellow Horse Caregiver,

You know there can be and will be a lot of health problems when working with horses. Do you know that you can prevent a lot of your horse’s problems, such as joint, ligament, tendon, muscle or hoof problems?

Even in the case of fetlock problems, you can sometimes take care of these yourself. It depends how bad the problems are, and how long your horse had this problem. In some situations you may need help from a farrier or a veterinarian if you can´t shoe the horse yourself.

I think prevention is the key word in talking about fetlock swelling. If you don´t carry out proper prevention methods, it is almost certain that you will have fetlock problems.  Here, we are talking about horses in training.

Of course if an accident happens, you can´t prevent it.

It is important to note that with the correct shoeing and daily care you can keep your horse on right track.

If a fetlock is swollen, it can be a result of different things:

- There can be a wound which has infected the area around the fetlock. Check very carefully, there can always be a hidden wound.

- There is also the possibility the horse may have hit his legs somewhere very hard, like rolling in the stable and hitting his leg on the wall. This can cause a temporary lameness also.

- Stepping wrongly onto uneven ground.

- The joint may have an infection because of strain caused by training. In this case the problem may have been there for a while, because this kind of problem doesn´t appear as swelling immediately.

If you are serious about providing the best care for your horses then you must read on. In fact, this could be the most important letter you've ever read.

Let me introduce myself and tell something about my life with horses before we move on.

Hi, my name is Diane. I live in the Northern New South Wales and I have trained Endurance horses and have ridden stock horses for many years. My first contact with horses was on my parents’ home farm. I grew up on a property in Queensland and spent my first 15 years working on my parents’ property. While I was involved in all aspects of farming, my passion was beef cattle and horses.

I began riding when I was 3 years old and bought my first horse when I was 12. She was a very timid horse and was unbroken. Even though I was so young, I was already very experienced with horses as my brother and I had spent a lot of time riding “problem” horses for other people in the district, giving them back when their problems were solved and they were able to be ridden by their owners. We were not paid for “retraining” these horses but were happy to help other people to overcome their difficulties and to be able to enjoy their horses.

We benefited by gaining a great deal of experience with all sorts of horses and enjoyed having an unlimited supply of horses to ride.  As a result, I was able to break in my young horse, myself, and she became a brilliant friend and partner. I called her Lightning because she could move very quickly – like greased lightning as the saying goes.  Therefore, I have spent almost all of my life with horses – more years than I would care to admit to… Time flies with horses …

From horses I get my pleasure. In my experience, I strive to make the best lives possible for the horses I care for. I know that, the better your horse is feeling, the more easily and affordably you can enjoy success, or just enjoy being with your co-worker, your friend, The Horse.

There is a saying, "When a horse fly bites you, there is no return, the horse is with you for good." Translation - Once you have raised, cared for and/or been around horses you will love them for life.

As a novice, quite soon I started to notice that having and training a horse is not always easy. Different kinds of problems, such as the one previously mentioned, can occur and I had to interrupt vital training to heal the horse.

There was nowhere to easily get information when I actually needed it. No information or help learning how to deal with the horse to minimize the risks such as the horse developing joint problems, ligament injuries, etc., or, when something had already happened, learning what you could do at home to help your horse before the problems grew worse.

Visiting vet clinics, I soon noticed that all kinds of horses had problems 'saddle horses, walkers, trotters, thoroughbreds, etc.' and, with time, joint problems were increasing and ligament and tendon problems were decreasing among horses.

From vets and trainers, I got some information by asking for details, but who had time to explain 'everything' about horse problems?

So, the only way was to try to find out the information myself, by asking several successful professionals 'vets, trainers, experienced horse owners' and by reading all that I could find written in language which was easy to understand.

I started to talk to trainers when I used their services, for example, asking them how they handled certain problems, and the more I started to know them, the easier it was to get information from them. Actually, with some of them, we started to be friends

It was the same with vets.  I observed them closely while they were working with my horses, asking what they were doing and why?  I wanted to learn as much as I could about horse problems.

I noticed that vets actually liked the fact that I showed so much interest. I think they were more motivated with my horse when they noticed how interested I was in what they were doing and that I was trying to do my best with my horses. They explained in detail what they were doing and why, so that I was able to gain a greater understanding of the various problems and how one thing would affect another.

Because I was so interested and involved, I gained more experience and knowledge, so that I could do more, myself, for my horses.

This interesting example of what can be done comes from Hannu Polvi,  a gentleman from Finland, who trains and races trotters.

Many years ago he bought an older horse, a gelding, a very lovely horse, like a teddy bear. He already had a problem with the suspensory ligament in his right hind, and some people told me that his career was over, because horses can't race with 'three' legs. It was all the time balancing on the edge with him: fall down or keep on 'rocking'. With concentrated daily care Hannu could keep this hind leg in order.

Then his right front hoof cracked. The crack was along so much of the back side of his hoof that he couldn't pack/patch it. Putting on a special shoe and pad, he could live with this problem too, and the horse even won some races in his 'old' age. He was not any world champion, but a nice hobby horse, and he thanked Hannu for his help by racing well. Isn't that the best thanks you can get for your work?

The more you work with your horse and handle him, the more you are training your horse to behave calmly and to develop confidence.

The horse needs to know his limits, but with time and with correct handling, this will come naturally. The horse will be more trusting and will develop confidence. Like humans, horses feel more relaxed when they have a daily routine. The horse feels safer when he "knows" what is going to happen.  I call it programming.

With the right programming you do not have to, and should not have to punish your horse. You can urge it gently back towards better health for the horse and better habits for yourself when it comes to caring for your horse.

What I have noticed among horse people, and I am now talking about people here "around me", with whom I have talked, asking questions, trying to get some useful tips, is that they don´t take fetlock problems so seriously.

What do I mean by that?

If the horse is not totally straight when moving and the trainer can´t see any swelling on the legs, then they think nothing is wrong with the horse.  There can still be something wrong with a horse’s fetlock, even if there is no obvious swelling.

"It is his habit." I have heard that a lot. And when the fetlock starts to swell, even then, they do not consider it a major problem.  They often think that they can solve the problem simply by hosing the fetlock with cold water or using blistering.

Perhaps this treatment may not, by this stage, be enough.

I think that the horse’s health may have already started on a downhill slide from that moment.

Now, later, thinking about all this, I think I needed a book where I could find at least basic information about problems and what to do. It could have saved me so much time and also saved me and my horses from many mistakes.
